JUNE 18-21: TO ROME AND BREWERTON, NY

Today we left Little Falls for Rome...Yes, just a quick fight on Alitalia and the Colosseum here we come!
Only 3 locks today.  After we arrived in Rome, we decided to just chill out and read our books as it was very hot.
Canal boat working to remove large trees.  There is a certain amount of flotsam and jetsam in the Erie Canal.  Not a good idea to hit any and destroy our prop.

Another working canal boat.

After leaving Rome, we experienced our first set of locks that lower the boat down.  To date, we have only been elevated. Only two locks today before we cross Lake Oneida which is the largest body of water on the Erie Canal.  Then onto Winter Harbor Marina where we will spend two nights.

Interesting boat crossing Lake Oneida.

Captain Peter in the Engine room.

For those mechanically inclined here is a report from the Captain/Chief Engineer/Cook & Bottlewasher (The second Mate and real cook & bottlewasher wishes the last title was true!)

Peter's daily routine includes various temperature readings in the engine room aka the holy place.  He also monitors the fuel polishing system as it is the lifeblood of the engine. He meticulously records the temperature of the stuffing box, turbo charger, the heat exchanger and each of the six cylinders.  In addition, he cleans the raw water intake filters, checks the transmission fluid level and last but not least the engine oil.  He is happy to report that everything so far is honky dory which is not a nautical term.  The previous owner, John Larson, kept the engine room in mint condition and Peter has maintained the practice.

His Majesty supervising and checking that Peter is doing his chores correctly.

Today is a chore day, laundry, shopping, including a manicure and pedicure for who else?  This dog has the life of Riley!
