JUNE 7: TO THE HUDSON RIVER

We needed an early morning start today to combat the effect of the East River which is the main artery into Manhattan.  The current in the East River at the height of ebb or flood stage can be as much as 4-5 knots.  So for a slow boat like ours, we only do 7-8 knots, we really need to time our transit at the right time.

We encountered a fellow "Looper", Glory Days, in Port Washington.  They plan to take the same route as us to the Hudson River via the Harlem River and not around Manhattan.  Manhattan is more scenic with the iconic Statue of Liberty but it is longer and NY harbor is very busy.  We will take that route on our return up the East Coast.

 Leaving Port Washington

Approaching New York City & the start of the East River

One of the many bridges on the Harlem River-we went through 10 or more.  All had good clearance for us.

Our fellow Loopers, Pat & Joe on Glory Days, heading down the Harlem River.

Cruising by Yankee Stadium-an unique experience seeing it from the river.

Cute boathouse located just before the last bridge on the Harlem River-the last bridge has a clearance of 5 feet so we definitely had to wait for it to be opened!

After a short wait for the bridge opening, we entered the Hudson River.   The Hudson is very wide at this point with high cliffs on the New Jersey side called the Palisades.  We are heading for Half Moon Bay Marina and plan to spend two nights there.

We celebrated Maureen's birthday at the Ocean House which is in a converted railroad car.  We checked with the locals who said that the restaurant is just up the road...if you are traveling by car that is!  After a few detours, we enjoyed excellent seafood and a bottle of wine-it it a BYOB so we enjoyed a great bottle of our own wine.
