We left Amsterdam on what promised to be another very hot day. Our destination today is Canajoharie. We arrived there around 2:00 p.m. after traversing another 3 locks but only being raised 31 feet. Canajoharie offered a free town dock and we were the only boat to tie up so we had the place to ourselves.

Downtown Canajoharie has some lovely restored buildings. It also is known for a fine collection of Winslow Homer oils and watercolors (350 in all). Not much in the way of provisioning though.
However, it did have an Irish Pub.
Onward to Little Falls, another day, another lock. It does beat being in the office though!
Guard gates on the canal which are lowered to prevent flooding.
Inside the lock as it is being flooded.
The Lock Masters!
En route to Little Falls, we had to traverse Lock 17 which raised us 40 feet. This lock is also unusual because the lock doors are lowered from above as opposed to all the other lock doors which swing out. Quite an experience being raised that high. There will be higher ones further on.
Little Falls Canal Harbor Marina. This was a wonderful stop. Delightful little town and scrupulously clean showers and heads. The marina is staffed with some very friendly volunteers. One of the volunteers, Chris, took Peter to the local supermarket in her own car and even helped him with the shopping.
Mohawk River running through downtown Little Falls. At this juncture, we have been travelling only on the Erie Canal as the Mohawk River is too narrow to be incorporated into the canal.
The town had several beautifully restored old houses.
The Falls that give the town its name.
Old power house that used to supply the textile factories that were once the mainstay of the town's economy.
Fortunately, Little Falls has reinvented itself and has antique stores, restaurants and festivals to attract marine and general tourism.
Canal Inn Restaurant that we enjoyed. The restaurant has quite a reputation and draws diners from a 35 mile radius. After dinner, the hostess, Barbara, gave us a ride back to the marina. Definitely, friendly locals.
